The best way to play a big stack in a poker tournament is to apply pressure where effective stacks, position and payouts make it profitable. Open more hands when opponents have good reasons to fold, build pots with strong value hands, and plan how you will respond when someone fights back.
Having more chips gives you flexibility. It does not make every opponent a target or every marginal hand worth playing.
This guide focuses on standard no-limit hold’em tournaments. Satellites, bounty tournaments and cash games require additional adjustments, explained below.
What Is a Big Stack in Poker?
A big stack is a stack that is large relative to other players’ stacks. Its strategic value also depends on the blinds, positions and tournament stage. There is no universal big-blind threshold.
With 70 big blinds at a table where most opponents have 15–30 BB, you have substantial coverage. The same 70 BB may be ordinary early in a tournament where several players have 150 BB.
Three terms help separate the different advantages:

You can have a big stack without being the chip leader. You can also have 100 BB but play only 18 BB effective against a short opponent.

Effective stacks govern the chips at risk in the hand. The wider field’s stacks and payouts still matter when evaluating tournament equity. In multiway pots, coverage can differ against each opponent.

These are starting points. Stack size alone cannot determine the correct action.
Why ICM Changes the Value of Your Chips
Winning chips and increasing your expected tournament winnings are related, but they are not always the same objective.
The Independent Chip Model, or ICM, estimates each player’s share of the remaining prize pool from the stacks and payouts. Under ordinary multi-place payouts, doubling your chips does not necessarily double your tournament equity. A risk premium describes the extra equity a confrontation can require beyond its chip-EV threshold. Basic ICM does not account for skill differences or the future sequence of hands.
This explains why a player can correctly fold more tightly near a payout threshold without being emotionally afraid. Your covering stack can exploit those incentives, but you still have tournament equity to protect yourself.
A calculated example: covering someone does not remove your own risk
Consider a simplified three-player model with stacks of 50, 30 and 20 chips. You hold 50. The 30-chip player offers an all-in confrontation costing you 30 chips to call.
For this teaching model, there are no blinds, antes, dead money or ties. Folding leaves the stacks unchanged. This isolates the payout effect; it is not a complete playable hand or a solved strategy.

With a $100 winner-take-all prize, the ICM values of those outcomes are $50, $80 and $20. You need 50% equity to break even on the call.
Now keep the stacks and confrontation unchanged, but pay $50 for first, $30 for second and $20 for third:

Your break-even winning probability becomes:
($38.39 − $29.50) ÷ ($44.00 − $29.50) ≈ 61.3%.
The underlying calculation uses unrounded values. These are calculated ICM outputs, not observed winnings or solver-derived hand ranges. For three players, first-place probability is your chip share; second-place probability sums the cases where each opponent finishes first; third is the remainder. Each probability is multiplied by its payout.
You survive even when you lose, yet the payout structure raises your required equity substantially in this model. “I cover them” is therefore not enough to justify a call.
How to Apply Pressure on the Bubble
The most promising target is an opponent whose range and tournament incentives make continuing difficult. That can be a medium stack, but it is not a fixed stack-size category.
Short stacks can face substantial money-bubble pressure too. A short player’s incentive to wait for a cash may differ sharply from their incentive to double up at a final table. Published short-stack ICM examples illustrate why the two stages should not be treated interchangeably.
My hand: opening A5 suited with covered blinds
In one tournament hand, nine players remained and eight would be paid. The blinds were 1,000/2,000 with a 2,000 big-blind ante.

The action folded to me with A5. I raised to 4,200, and both blinds folded.
The useful feature of this hand is the setup. I had position, a playable suited ace, and coverage over both blinds. A much shorter player remained. Those factors made an opening raise reasonable and gave the blinds payout considerations beyond their immediate pot odds.
The 2.1-BB open also limited the chips committed before either blind responded. If someone had reraised, I would still have needed to evaluate their range, sizing and stack rather than continue automatically.
Both blinds folding does not prove that bubble pressure caused their decisions; their cards are unknown. This hand illustrates my reasoning, not a verified increase in fold frequency. The complete payout schedule and remaining stacks would be needed for a precise ICM range analysis.
An observed hand is not proof of a mistake
While watching a Poker Dream Ladies Event in 2025, I saw a medium stack lose with A9 suited against a big stack’s AK suited. A player with about 3 BB had folded and reached the money when the medium stack was eliminated.
The outcome showed how one player can benefit from another’s elimination. It does not, by itself, establish that playing A9 suited was wrong. Without the full positions, action, sizing, stacks and payouts, I cannot make that judgment reliably.
When reviewing a bubble hand, ask whether the decision made sense with the information available before the cards were revealed.
Open Wider Without Calling Every Reshove
An opening raise can earn chips when everyone folds. A call against an all-in cannot win through a fold. That difference lets some hands belong in an opening range without belonging in a calling range.
Hypothetical hand: K7 suited faces a shove
The tournament is in the money. There is no immediate major pay jump, although tournament-equity effects may remain.
Blinds: 2,000/4,000 with a 4,000 big-blind ante.
You have 240,000 on the button and K7.
The small blind starts with 62,000; the big blind starts with 112,000, before forced bets.
You open to 8,000. The small blind shoves for 62,000 total. The big blind folds.
Before deciding, calculate the price:

Chip-EV break-even equity = 54,000 ÷ 132,000 = approximately 40.9%.
You must compare K7 suited’s equity against the opponent’s entire estimated shoving range with that threshold, then consider tournament equity. Neither “they have 15.5 BB” nor “I cover them” specifies their range.
For illustration, if a range calculation gave your hand 38% equity, the call would lose approximately 3,840 chips relative to folding: 0.38 × 132,000 − 54,000. At 44%, it would gain approximately 4,080 chips before payout effects. Those equity percentages are hypothetical sensitivity inputs, not calculated equities for K7 suited against a claimed range.
If your equity is insufficient, fold. The initial raise can still have been profitable because of the other possible responses. Whether K7 suited belongs in your opening range also depends on how frequently both blinds defend or shove.
Use Effective Stacks to Plan Postflop
Your total stack does not tell you how many streets of betting remain. Start with the effective stack and the pot.
Stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) is the remaining effective stack divided by the current pot. It describes the room left for betting, not an automatic instruction to stack off.
Hypothetical hand: top pair on a changing board
You have 80 BB on the button with AJ. The big blind starts the hand with 31 BB before posting a 1-BB ante and a 1-BB blind.
The action folds to you. You raise to 2.5 BB, the small blind folds, and the big blind calls. Including the folded 0.5-BB small blind and the ante, the pot is 6.5 BB. The big blind has 27.5 BB left.
The flop is J84. The big blind checks. You bet 2 BB as an illustrative value line, and they call.

The turn is 9. The big blind checks again.
The 9 completes flushes for two-club hands and straights for QT and T7, where those hands are in the big blind’s range. Your top pair has no club. Some worse hands may still call, but a second bet can also build a large pot against a stronger continuing range.
Checking back is a reasonable option: you keep the pot smaller and retain showdown value. Betting may be preferable against an opponent who continues with enough worse hands, but it needs that justification. Your 80-BB stack is not the reason to fire again.
This is an illustrative line, not a claim that the flop size or turn check is uniquely optimal. The lesson is that your opponent’s range and the board can change enough to stop a value-betting line—even while you remain the big stack.
Respect Other Big Stacks Without Automatically Avoiding Them
If you have 90 BB and an opponent starts with 85 BB, losing a heads-up all-in leaves you with 5 BB, assuming no additional losses to other players. They can severely damage you, but they cannot directly eliminate you in that confrontation.
That risk deserves attention, especially when payouts matter. It does not mean you should decline every pot against them. They also face consequences when playing against your covering stack.
Before building a large pot, identify what supports the action: a strong value range, a credible bluff, favorable position or an observed mistake you can exploit. Avoiding variance is not a substitute for evaluating expected value.
Adjust as the Tournament Changes

ICM does not begin at the bubble or disappear after it. Its significance changes with the situation.
How to Build a Big Stack
You cannot guarantee a chip lead. Favorable all-ins and coolers contribute to many large stacks, but they are not a repeatable plan.
The controllable opportunities are more specific:
Steal against observed overfolding. Expand selectively when the players behind give up too often.
Value bet against wide calling ranges. Identify the worse hands that will pay before increasing the size or frequency of your bets.
Choose three-bets with a purpose. A wide opener may fold, call or four-bet too much; each response calls for a different adjustment.
Use position to improve decisions. Playable hands gain value when you can see an opponent act first, but weak hands remain vulnerable at shallow effective stacks.
Review large pots without judging only the result. A lost all-in can be a sound decision, and a winning bluff can be poorly chosen.
Accumulation follows profitable decisions. Being chip leader early is not a reason to accept a negative-expectation gamble.
A Five-Question Checklist Before You Raise
What can actually be contested? Check effective stacks and coverage, including players still to act.
What do the payouts change? Consider both your incentives and your opponents’ incentives.
Why is this hand profitable here? Identify position, value, fold equity or a specific opponent tendency.
What happens if someone fights back? Have a response to likely three-bets and shoves; reassess if the action differs.
What is my postflop plan? Think about pot size, likely ranges and which runouts favor continued betting.
A big stack gives you more ways to find profitable decisions. Use the additional options deliberately, and let the hand—not your position on the chip-count leaderboard—determine when to keep betting.
